Heydorn's AEW Dynamite Receipt 4/30/25
The good, bad, and ugly from this week's episode of AEW Dynamite.
-Alright, since nobody else will say it, I will. It’s ok to be tired with Young Bucks style tag team matches. Sure, this week’s opening eight-man tag match that featured a plethora of talent was fun to watch, but it all felt meaningless to me. They had some cute spots and some entertaining stuff, but none of it felt like it mattered. It’s gotten to the point where if you’ve seen a match like this one, you’ve seen em all. In the talent’s defense, there’s only so much you can do in those matches and most of it has been done before in AEW. I’d just like to see all involved leave that match zone and try to freshen up into something different.
Tease
-The one shining part of that opening contest this week was the Kenny Omega vs. Kazuchika Okada teases. AEW is clearly angling that way for a match at All In and so far, the audience seems primed and ready for it. It needs story and depth to truly be magnificent, but there is plenty of time to add those ingredients into the mix.
-Smart to give Samoa Joe and The Opps a strong victory this week — even if it was against a bunch of jobbers. A cage match for Joe vs. Jon Moxley for the AEW World Championship in a couple weeks at Beach Break is a very good idea. It adds some edge to the match and gives it added places to go, which is important given that the outcome of Moxley retaining is almost a certainty.
-Toni Storm vs. Miyu Yamashita was fine — not great, but fine. Mone vs. Storm seems like the All In match Tony Khan is building to and that’s the right call. The limited interaction between those two women this week carried some buzz that should only grow as they feud together.
He’s in
-It’s nice to see Josh Alexander in The Don Callis Family. It gives him something to latch on with rather than debut as a big get only to fade away into obscurity. That said, AEW could have and should have booked a more definitive angle for Alexander joining the group. Yes, he attacked Adam Page, but when that happened joining Callis didn’t come across as official. Glad it is, but as a company they should want to get more out of key angles like that.
-Good to see you, Nick Wayne. Wayne had a nice match against Jay Lethal — when’s the last time Lethal was on AEW Dynamite? Wayne is going to be a strong babyface for AEW when the time comes. The feud with Christian Cage just keeps brewing and Cage has been playing the jerky, overbearing father role to a “T.”
-Well, if you expected Adam Page vs. Kyle Fletcher to be a crazy good match, it met those high expectations. Page and Fletcher were tremendous. The match was hard-hitting and featured some crazy bumps like piledrivers on the ring apron, but it was the story and the stakes that drove all that action. Credit the announcers for leaning into the stakes of this being a tournament match for a shot at the world championship down the road. That’s a big deal and the commentary around the narrative along with the intense action made for a fun atmosphere.
Incoming Banger Alert
-Adam Page vs. Will Ospreay is the men’s Owen Hart Cup Final. Not a surprise there, but the match itself has “banger” written all over it.
