Heydorn's AEW Dynamite Receipt 7/2/25
The good, bad, and ugly from this week's episode of AEW Dynamite.
-I like the addition of the Texas Death stipulation for Jon Moxley vs. Adam Page at All In. That match was going to have outside involvement and because of this stipulation, it’s way less hard to make all of that make sense. Plus, Moxley is better in the ring when he can use weapons and take violent bumps. Thumbs up.
What about the history?
-The way Page went about getting the stipulation added worked. I’m not a fan of inter-gender wrestling, but Page taking out Marina Shafir was a way to show how far deep he’ll go to win the championship. It worked better than a bloody attack.
-If you’re Adam Page, how do you not bring up the fact that you’ve already beaten Moxley in a Texas Death Match? You can retcon a lot of history in pro wrestling, but not something like this, which is so prevalent to the story at hand. This history should have been built into the match.
-A good match between Mercedes Mone and Mina Shirakawa, but not a great one. Probably better to slow this one down, though, because you want the Mone vs. Toni Storm match to stand out as better.
-Mone hitting Storm with her championship belt looked weak. Real weak. Good idea and a fine chapter in their story, but c’mon, that spot has to look better.
Shocking
-Hey, what do you know? MJF is the number two entrant into the Casino Gauntlet opposite Mark Briscoe. Shocking! Shocking I tell ya. This was too predictable, but works to give that match at All In some storyline juice.
-AEW did a nice job of putting sympathy on Jet Speed with the attack they suffered at the hands of Hurt Syndicate. They looked like fighters and have a huge mountain to overcome. Problem is, I don’t see them overcoming it. A good angle, but if you’re Jet Speed and aren’t winning the tag titles at All In, you’re not looking great at the moment.
EVP titles don’t matter enough
-The Young Bucks visiting their old haunts and ripping on them was a nice little heel touch for the show. They had a fine trios match with Konosuke Takeshita that they won, but the news was the angle afterward that involved Swerve Strickland and Will Ospreay. It’s The Bucks and their EVP titles on the line against Swerve, Ospreay, and their shots at the AEW World Championship for the next year at All In. Look, The Bucks needed to get something back in order for them to justify putting their EVP titles on the line, but this is too much. Ospreay and Strickland are acting like they have to sacrifice everything in order to take down The Bucks as EVP’s, but the fact is, The Young Bucks have shown to have very little impact as EVP’s. Strickland and Ospreay are risking way too much. Plus, everyone knows Ospreay and Strickland aren’t going to be pulled out of the title picture for a year, so this stipulation signals the match winner too clearly.
Welcome back Kota Ibushi
-Wow, it was nice seeing Kota Ibushi have that match in the main event. Right? We haven’t seen anything close to that Ibushi in a while. A really strong match with Okada and the right finish with Okada winning. Omega reuniting with Ibushi didn’t get a ton of attention, but their relationship hasn’t got much attention in AEW anyway. This was about Omega’s return, not the return of The Golden Lovers.
